Calipers

Brake caliper painting in San Jose.

Calipers painted so the color shows behind the spokes, and the dull, faded metal does not.

The part of the wheel everyone sees and nobody finishes.

On a car with open wheels, the brake caliper is right there behind the spokes. After a few years of heat and brake dust it is usually faded, flaking or stained a flat grey-brown, and it spoils a set of wheels that are otherwise clean.

Rogers Detailing Studio paints calipers for drivers in San Jose who want that corner of the car to match the rest of it. A bright red, a black or a color that picks up the paint are the usual choices, and the studio can talk through which one suits the wheel before anything is touched.

Clean, mask, paint: the order that keeps it sharp.

The caliper is cleaned first, because paint will not hold to brake dust and grease. Everything around it that should not get color is masked off: the rotor face, the pads, the hose, the bolts and the wheel behind.

Then the color goes on, and any lettering is dealt with deliberately. The Corvette caliper in the photo on this page is a good example. It was painted red and the Corvette script was left crisp in black, so the caliper reads as factory-clean rather than simply covered.

Masking is where a caliper job is won or lost. A tight edge means the paint stops where it should, and the finished caliper looks like part of the car.

Pairs with wheel work, film and coating, then a gentle routine.

Painted calipers look best next to wheels that have also had attention, and they sit well alongside the rest of the studio's work, such as paint protection film on the front end or a ceramic coating on the paint. Tell Rogers what else the car is in for and the jobs can be planned together.

Afterwards, go easy on the wheel cleaner. Harsh, acidic wheel cleaners can attack fresh paint, so use something gentle on the calipers and rinse well. Call (408) 813-7183 for a free quote.
